Impromptu Road Trip

Unfortunately my Grandma passed away in April after fighting a long battle with Alzheimer's. When my Grandpa passed away last December, Eli was only a few weeks old, Lou was in New York for work and I wasn't about to fly home with two small kids by myself, so I had to miss the funeral. So when my Grandma passed away, I felt as though I needed to be there. So what did I do?? Packed up the bus and threw the kids and Lou in the car and headed out on a 24 hour road trip with two toddlers!! Had I gone crazy?? Maybe!

As I am writing this post a month later, I realize that people probably thought that we were crazy driving across the country with two toddlers, but I have to admit it went pretty smoothly! Lou did the majority of the driving on the way there so I was able to help the kids. We ate A LOT of McDonald's and fast food and we stopped and spent the night somewhere in Missouri, which was the worse part of the trip. We got to the hotel at 1:30am and the kids thought it was time to play! So a couple of hours later we finally got a few hours of sleep before we were up and at it again! We rolled into Aunt Ninny's house around midnight and got settled. We had kept this a big surprise and didn't tell my mom we were coming so the next morning we called her and over and SURPRISE, we made it just in time for the funeral!

While we were home we were able to enjoy Easter with family and an Easter Egg hunt with Sophia and Noah.  The Easter bunny came a day early since we headed out of town on Easter morning. The kids walked to see the cows and chickens every morning with Grandma, helped take care of Papa Jeff's boo boo knee and had a fun water fight with Sophia! We turned a sad event into a fun family vacation!

Lou had to fly home early and I was planning on driving the whole way home with just the kids, but Aunt Ninny came to the rescue and drove half way back with me. We spent the night in an Embassy Suite so the kids could swim and blow off some energy and Ninny and I could indulge in some free Happy Hour wine! We dropped Ninny off in Kansas City to fly home and I headed the rest of the way by myself and it went GREAT!

  1. I am still so happy you all came to help me....it really meant a lot that you came. Just seeing those sweet babies made me feel better. I loved sharing my time with all of you, and I think the cows and chickens were a fun part of your visit.....I cannot wait until Mia and Eli can fly to spend time with Ninny, Guncle, Papa Jeff, and Grandma...when they are old enough just put them on the plane and we will have "summer camp" on Jarvis Rd. xoxo love Mom
